HPC SYSTEMS, INC. ANNOUNCES INTEL DUAL XEON GRID CLUSTER ARRAY

At the Intel Developer's Forum, HPC Systems, Inc., in collaboration with Intel, Agilent, Mellanox and IBM, showcased the HPC Systems, Inc. Grid ClusterArray, the highest density Intel Dual Xeon server grid cluster available today, utilizing Mellanox's high-speed InfiniBand host channel adapters and switch and Agilent's low latency 8-port 4x InfiniBand switch chassis.
Based on Intel's Xeon processors, the ClusterArray will be demonstrating IBM's DB2 cluster database engine, which is able to fully utilize the increased bandwidth of InfiniBand and the power of 16 clustered Intel Xeon processors. In addition, InfiniBand management software from Lane15 Software will also be showcased on the ClusterArray. The Cluster Array will be showcased in HPC Systems, Inc.'s booth at IDF being held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose.
With escalating real estate prices and higher costs associated with building and maintaining data centers, density has become a main factor in the design of servers. 1U rackmount servers, with a height of 1.75", are becoming more and more popular with their ability to fit 40 servers in a rack. The ClusterArray, with HPC Systems, Inc.'s patent-pending DoubleRack technology, takes this a step further by cutting the server depth in half to 14.9 inches, thereby allowing HPC Systems, Inc.'s servers to be racked back-to-back effectively by doubling the density of its 1U servers and achieve the equivalent of a 1/2U form factor rackmount server.
This allows for up to 80 ClusterArray server nodes to be racked in a standard 19" rack. And despite the condensing of space, the Cluster Array still offers full-size server features such as support for up to two Intel Xeon processors at up to 3.06GHz, up to 12 GB of DDR ECC memory, up to 300GB of IDE hard drive storage on one drive and Gigabit and Fast Ethernet network interfaces. "The ClusterArray represents the next evolution of high density server design and offers the power of up to 160 Intel Xeon processors with next-generation high- speed InfiniBand interconnects," said Rex Wong, president of HPC Systems, Inc..
The ClusterArray demo at IDF will be interconnected using high-speed InfiniBand technology from Mellanox and Agilent. Mellanox's second-generation InfiniBand Switch, with InfiniScale technology and second-generation Host Channel Adapter, with InfiniHost technology, enable standard single and multiprocessor servers to deliver performance previously found only in high- end multiprocessor server systems.
The InfiniBand architecture and InfiniHost silicon are designed to lower costs, improve reliability, scalability and overall availability of servers. The InfiniHost device benefits communication or bridging applications, such as to the Internet, by supporting millions of simultaneous connections, helping to lower the cost of web-centric communication.

The high-quality Agilent 8-port 4x InfiniBand 1U switch chassis is the industry-first InfiniBand switch chassis in production. It is designed with Agilent's HDMP-2840 InfiniBand switch IC. The Agilent 8-port 4x switch chassis in the Cluster Array demo provides 160Gb/s aggregate bandwidth with high- efficiency and low latency connections among HPC Systems, Inc.'s Cluster Array technology servers.

"With InfiniBand architecture expected to deploy in data centers in 2003, it's exciting to see powerful Intel-architecture-powered InfiniBand grid clusters on display at IDF," said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel's Enterprise Platform Group. "Working with HPC Systems, Inc. has allowed us to showcase the performance of dense Xeon processor servers."

The Cluster Array is shipping now and is in use at several Fortune 1000 enterprises, universities and research institutions including Boston University and Notre Dame.
